My mommy skills

This morning I beamed with pride after extracting a very large booger from my daughter's nose. I never thought that would be something to be proud of, but I can tell you I was grinning from ear to ear and may have even cheered "YES!" to Avery's surprise.

In the world of motherhood, I've found there are a million new skills to master. Some come easily, some are more difficult. Diapering, administering medicine, sucking out boogers, bathing a squirmy, wet infant, getting a two year old to eat his vegetables and making it fun, or convincing him that "snack time" doesn't always equal fruit snacks or that monsters and big, scary ogres are just pretend. (It's interesting trying to explain real and pretend, by the way).

It took me awhile to learn there was an actual right way and wrong way to use a nose syringe, for example. They don't come with instructions - I think I stumbled across an article online with that informed me how to create enough suction to be effective. When my little ones have stuffy noses and can't breathe, I want to keep the torturing to a minimum. Anything that involves saline nose drops and a nose syringe is certainly torture.

Alex pinched his finger at daycare yesterday and came home with a Band-Aid. It was his first time wearing one willingly and he was very proud of it. By bedtime, it had fallen off from hand washing and playing. Cuddled up in bed reading books with me he asked for a new one, "I need a Band-Aid Mommy" and when I gave him a Band-Aid with his favorite Sesame Street characters on it, I was both his hero and the best Mommy in the world in his eyes. I felt that warm, mushy, Mommy-love feeling knowing I helped my little one feel better. It was the same way I felt this morning with Avery. It's one of the best feelings in the world.

LOL--I had to laugh when I open your blog and see a pic of the far too familar (unfortunately :) item we fondly refer to as the "Brain Sucker" here. I whole heartedly agree it takes some finesse to properly extract those darn boogers :) And, I so get the band-aid thing as well. Excellent Mommy skills, Missy...WTG!

Well, please do share your tips. :) Daniel hates the "brain sucker"! Two weeks ago, I extracted a booger from his left nostril that had been sitting there for at least a week, taunting Steve and me, as he refused to let us near it. I took the opportunity to work at it while he was asleep in his carseat in a parking lot. He woke up and started to fuss at me, but I kept going, and finally pulled out this gynormous booger that was so much bigger than what it looked like from the outside. I was SO PROUD of myself! And that is a story I can only tell right here, right now - LOL!

Today I found Thomas the Train band aids and Alex is so in love with him. And just as I was writing this, he woke up (at midnight) sobbing, telling me that one of the daycare kids took his band-aid. I showed it to him on his finger and had to convince him it was safe and no one was going to take it! (I better send a spare to daycare tomorrow).

Emilie - you may already know this and it was just news to me - but the "trick" to making the syringe work is to squeeze it before you put it in the nose, insert it and hopefully get a good seal with the nostril, and then CLOSE the other nostril, either by covering it with your finger or by gently pushing it shut - and then let go of the bulb, allowing it to SUCK with major force. If the other nostril is open, there isn't nearly as much suction.

Also... I've found that dry boogers won't go anywhere usually, because they are typically stuck to the sides. So a couple drops of saline nose drops usually softens it right up within about 5-10 seconds, and then it will come out... :) Happy sucking...
