I think it's a fair assumption that bloggers who have staying power enjoy writing, as opposed to those who abandon their blogs after a few short weeks or months. I think I'll finally admit that I enjoy writing as much as I enjoy talking. One of my favorite things to do is sit in a coffee shop or restaurant (sans children) and chat it up for hours.
That's why I love getting comments when I post something. I've never met a blogger who didn't like comments. Comments let me know someone out there is listening. Someone cares. Someone learned something. Someone can teach me something. I have a stats counter that tells me how many visitors show up on this blog and where they came from. There are plenty of days when I have lots and lots of visitors and only one or two comments. What's up with that? I recently joined a fun blog networking site Secret is in the Sauce (SITS). It features new bloggers daily and encourages you to leave comments when you visit other members. I've had a lot of fun with it and it's only been a few days.
If you like my blog enough to keep coming back, please say something every once in awhile. I know that not all of you are bloggers. Some of you are random people who found my blog searching google for cool baby products or food allergies and keep coming back for more. My personal friends and family, my high school and college friends, my Twelve-Step friends, my cousins, my coworkers. You say to me in person, "Hey I loved that post on your blog .... " and I think "Why didn't you comment?" Let me know you are here. Speak up! :)
As a visitor to other blogs, I do my best to comment on every post I like or love. If it's not relevant to me or I was offended in some way, I probably won't read the whole thing and won't comment. If you leave a comment here and I've never seen you here before, chances are great I'll write you back or visit your blog if you have one to check you out, too.
Shy? Nervous? Comment virgin? You don't need to have your own blog, or even a web site. You don't need to register for an account. At the end of each post, there is a link that says "Click here to comment." Click on it! Then type your comment into the big, white, empty box. Then click on the button that says "Name/URL" and simply type in your first name. If you have a blog or web site you want to share, type it in the URL space. Then hit "Publish Your Comment."
Thanks for listening. Have I inspired you to comment? Can I get a ROLL CALL people - say hey!

Ha! I am the first to respond. And one of the reasons: because you just stopped by and commented on my blog. It truly is the gift that (should) keep(s) on giving. I agree with you, Missy, and I wish more people would stop long enough to comment on my blog as well. I adore those who do, but like you, sometimes I have hundreds of lookers and one comment. So, as you saw with today's post, I'm going to try to ask more questions, hoping that might stimulate more discussion. Because like you, I love to gab...and write...and gab. Have an awesome weekend!
Comments really are like little presents. Glad you are enjoying SITS!
Comments make me smile, every time. I love when I write a post the draws attention, makes people want to comment. But latley, even the posts that I think are just plain blah are getting some and that makes me even happier.
I read hundreds of blogs in my Google Reader. It makes it difficult for me to comment to them all. I try to only make a comment when I feel I have something to say. :)
Hi Missy...I really enjoy your blog and have commented once or twice, but definitely not as often as I check out your blog (which is...um...every day). However, I did vote for you MANY times in the contest and am hoping you win! I'm from Indianapolis and a SAHM with a 3 year old boy. I found your blog through Emilie's blog. I don't have a blog of my own...I don't really enjoy writing. Sometimes when something really cute happens with my son, I'll write a cute email to my family about it and think, "This would make a great blog post" but that's as far as I get with it. Anyway, since you share so much of your life, I thought I'd share a little with you!
Elizabeth
HEY!!!
Okay, I'll come out from the lurking pool to say hello. Love your blog - found you through Kim @ I Want a Minivan. As a mom of two under 4 I always like to virtually commiserate with other moms of little ones. Have to say thank you for the walnut gorgonzola salad recipe while I'm on here. It is so good and so easy that my family actually thought I could cook for one brief moment of time. They know better though. Keep up the great writing!
I love comments, but I need to remember to comment more. I love your blog...keep up the fabulous work!
I love SITS too. I tend to think *not* leaving a comment is like knocking on the door and running away.
PS - that was exactly the pasta salad recipe that I searched (and found) on your blog for vacation. Thanks again.
Can I get an AMEN! Stopping in from SITS to say Hi!
I think I found your blog via cribsheet or Emilie's blog, but enjoy your posts, esp the breastfeeding one. I am working and nursing/pumping my 7 month old and it is a labor of love. All the support I can get helps me get through the next month of hauling the supplies/etc!
Missy - I love the gal who said not leaving a comment is like knocking on the door and running away. Love you - and even though I am a born again virgin, no kids, no food allergies and have powered milk for lack of interest - I love your blog.
Mary Ann
Just stopping in from SITS to say HI!
We all love comments, don't we?
I always wonder why people don't comment but at least they're looking.
Like your post.
Have a good day.
Hello. I feel the same way. I check out my site meter and see that people have read, but no one posts. What's up with that?!!! Personally, if a blogger has only a couple comments and I have something to say, then I will. If there are oodles of comments already out there, then I tend not to comment.
Happy Saturday Sharefest!
Thanks everyone! I'm leaving this up a couple of days just to see who comes out of the woodwork. I know there are lots of friends who read that haven't said HEY yet.
I hope my post didn't come across as too needy... :) It's been strange watching my total numbers of readers grow, and my time and energy into my blog increase, but comments kind of dragging lately. So thanks for indulging me.
Some of you don't have e-mail addresses or blogs attached to your names, so here are my responses to you:
Elizabeth - THANK you for visiting my blog and for voting for me in the contest. I really miss Emilie's blog posts - thanks for mentioning her. :)
Robin - thanks for delurking! Nice to meet you - Glad you tried that sald - those candied walnuts are amazing, aren't they? Fancy!
Anonymous - I wish I had a name to put with your comment, I'm so happy to hear my breastfeeding/pumpming at work posts were helpful to you! Congrats on breastfeeding and pumping for 7 months - that's awesome! Keep it up and always feel free to e-mail me if there's anything I can do to help support you with that!
Mary Ann - are you my friend Mary Ann from Sq. 13? Glad you still find something interesting here to read even though we have nothing in common! Thanks for the comment.
Girl, I'm feeling like such a bad friend to your blog lately. I don't think I would feel so guilty if I didn't even make it over to your blog, but sadly, I do and I just don't comment. I've been really bad about commenting on blogs lately. I've also been absolutely horrible about updating my own blog (it's been over 1 month now!) and it's too bad, really.
Know that I do read and I still love your posts and am sorry that I don't show you the comment love.
Write on! ;o) It's always fun to get feedback from readers. Those of us who blog must make it a two-way street, commenting on the other blogs we like. I guess it's the new B2B - blogger 2 blogger! Bloggers Unite: Let's raise each other up!!
You know I read ya!
LOL! I was just thinking this about my blog, though this summer has been rough on content. I love to write, but we have been so busy that I have not posted as much as I like...nor have I read my roll as much as normal (I have 473 unread posts at the time of this comment!).
Oy! Thank you for spreading the love. Comments are my favorite part of blogging. I'm a Leo like that.
I agree with a couple of the other commenters - I comment when a post is relevant to me. If I don't feel I have anything to add, I move on.
HOWDY!
I added a "top commenters" widget to my blog to try to encourage comments but most of the time, it's not working. And so many people use readers that they never even come to the actual blog to see that. Bummer.
and um, can I steal this post? Or at least parts of it? :D
Roll Call - I'm only a couple of weeks late! Story of my life! Day late and dollar short -
Anyway - one of my girlfriends has a pic on her blog that says 'comments are the new hug' and they sort of are aren't they?
Anyway - I'm here, I'm reading...Just can't always keep up is all!
